Connected University
Connected University is an online professional development
community, that provides educators with courses, learning resources, support,
and interaction with peers
nationwide.
Online courses are designed to help teachers learn to integrate technology and improve student
learning in their classrooms.

An education grant - Enhancing Technology Through Education - that
results from the No Child Left Behind legislation and is specifically
geared to improve student academic achievement through the use of
technology in elementary and secondary schools. Additional goals
include:
assisting every student in crossing the digital divide by ensuring
that every student is technologically literate by the time the student
finishes the eighth grade
encouraging the effective integration of technology resources and
systems with teacher training and curriculum development to establish
research-based instructional methods that can be widely implemented as
best practices by State educational agencies and local educational
agencies
SAU 16 received the grant for the regional training
center - SPDC.

I-Safe
an Internet Safety program that provides awareness and knowledge
that enables students to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive or
unlawful online bahavior and to respond appropriately
the program was developed by a non-profit foundation and is
available at no cost
a programming language used to enhance web pages. Users may
have it turned off on their web browsers and therefore web pages that
utilize it may not display properly
Kidspiration/Inspiration
a software program used in several elementary schools that helps
students develop writing skills - called a "concept mapping" program
Kidspiration™ helps students K-5 see, organize and develop their great
ideas.
a software program used by special education that provides a
scanning, reading and writing solution for people with learning

LoTi - Levels of Technology Implementation
a scale used in a effort to accurately measure authentic classroom
technology use.
the scale focuses on the use of technology as an
interactive learning medium because this particular component has the
greatest and lasting impact on classroom pedagogy and is the most
difficult to implement and assess. The challenge is not merely to use
technology to achieve isolated tasks (e.g., word processing a research
paper, creating a multimedia slide show, browsing the Internet), but
rather to integrate technology in an exemplary manner that supports
purposeful problem-solving, performance-based assessment practices,
and experiential learning.
A US Government Act that is a result of the new education law that
Pres. Bush signed on January 8, 2002.
requires that all schools develop specific goals (i.e. by 2014,
100% of the nation's school children will reach proficiency in reading

Personal Digital Assistants - a specific brand name is Palm Pilot
All SAU 16 administration and all school principals have been
issued and trained in using PDA's
A Microsoft program that works with MS Powerpoint. It helps
you capture, synchronize, and publish audio, video, slides, and
images—resulting in a presentation that is viewable in a Web browser.

SASI
A software application referred to as a "Student Information
System" used by several SAU 16 schools for student
attendance, scheduling, discipline tracking, grades, etc.
SAS in School
an online resource utilized by the Coop. Middle and Exeter High
schools that provides educational materials and curriculum guides in
many different subjects.

A Smartboard is an electronic white board that is fully
interactive.
The board is connected to your computer through a serial
connection, your computer output is connected to a projector, and
that is projected on the board. You now have, in effect, one very
large Tablet PC. You can operate your pc from the board (you
literally tap the board with your finger to duplicate a mouse click),
you can write or draw on the board, and you can print or save your
input to the board. You can write a series
of notes on the board, and then tap the written text and it is
instantly OCR'ed into editable text that can be saved as a file or
printed.
SPDC - Seacoast Professional Development Center
A training center located in downtown Exeter for the establishment
of professional development services for teachers, administrators, and
para-professionals.
provides workshops and on-line courses as well as intensive
two-week summer institutes on a range of topics.
A computer setup that utilizes older computers by using a Server
that provides the computing power and attaching older/lower power PC's
that act as dumb terminals and basically provide only the mouse,
keyboard, monitor and network attachment.

WebCT
WebCT is a user-friendly development tool that enables teachers to
put class information online without needing complicated webmaster
skills. The WebCT environment provides students a secure and safe
environment to discuss and explore school related subjects.
Similar software package to "Blackboard", which is also
used by many schools and colleges for E-learning.
A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of
the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are
designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information
rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the
levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
