SAU 16 Keyboarding

Learning to use a computer keyboard proficiently is now considered to be a basic skill necessary for everyone entering today's job market.  This website section was designed for parents and teachers and students to understand:

  • why it is important to learn to keyboard
  • what is proper keyboarding technique
  • what is considered basic proficiency at each grade level
  • the importance of safety and ergonomics
  • how to learn or teach keyboarding
  • available resources

SAU 16 schools teach proper keyboarding technique to all students in early elementary grades. Teachers and parents are expected to encourage proper technique for their students. Early bad habits are hard to break, so attention should be paid each time a child uses a computer.  It is very important to monitor and correct proper posture and hand position. In elementary schools, computer class time will introduce these concepts and spend several minutes each class on keyboarding, then proceed to other computer and curriculum topics. In middle school, keyboarding skills are important and required to completing tasks and lessons successfully and in a timely fashion. We encourage you to take a few minutes to read through this keyboarding section of our website to understand the importance of stressing proper keyboarding technique and find resources to help your students gain proficiency in properly using computers.
