ERCSD Curriculum Committee Meeting

April 8, 2008 – 7:30 PM

Meeting began at 8:00 PM.

 

1.   Family & Consumer Curriculum Report – Jerry Frew: Jerry Frew, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Assessment, started his report by recognizing the CMS faculty for their support for students.  He gave an overview of the work that the thirteen (13) committee members did with the Family and Consumer and Technology Education Report.

• He indicated that they had held six (6) meetings this year and that at a couple of their meetings the Department of Education personnel were present
• He shared that they used the NH Standards as their template
• He also noted that Peter Lund has served on the NH Technology Education Committee and that a lot of the current standards came from this state committee
• He added that the committee is going to offer courses that allow students to explore career options and that the guidance counselors were involved and made significant suggestions to the committee
• The following initiatives will occur this summer:

-         Further curriculum work by the teachers

-         What should be required strands and elective strands

• Mr. Frew noted that the committee did not discuss the transporting of students from the high school to the Tuck Learning Campus

 

2.   EHS Youth at Risk Survey – Victor Sokul: The Youth at Risk Survey was distributed to the board members and Mr. Sokul gave an explanation of the survey instrument.  The following represents the analysis and initiatives that are taking place due to the survey results:

• Training a cohort of students to be “student leaders”
• Meeting with various people, i.e., health teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, etc., in terms of the next steps for the school
• Mr. Sokul described various scenarios and the consequences of violating the Drug and Alcohol Policy
• He has involved his Parent Advisory Counsel to assist in shaping procedures and practices for EHS students
• He also noted that the superintendent gave permission last year to have police dogs search the school and that probably this practice will continue this year

 

The question was asked if we were doing a similar survey at CMS, and at this time, we are not.  Mr. O’Malley will research if there is a similar survey that could be administered to middle school students.  Also, Mr. O’Malley indicated he would be in favor of a School Resource Officer. 

 

3.   NWEA Testing: The superintendent noted that Tony Baldasaro and Cindy Freyberger are working together to present NWEA information to the board at its April 22^nd meeting.  A long discussion ensued regarding whether the NWEA is administered twice a year or once a year.  Superintendent asked that the board make a decision on this as soon as possible.

 

4.   From the Floor: In reference to a question that was asked regarding energy conversation, Chair Trueman noted that recycling will be on the April 22^nd agenda.
