Education-related Newsletters and Mailing Lists

Newsletters, mailing lists and listservs are great ways to stay in touch with what's new and what others are thinking and doing in the education community.

The latest technology used for getting updates is RSS. displays on websites that offer this feature. You can then use a Newsreader to review the information. For more information on RSS, see our RSS News Feed section on the SAU 16 website. Many of the excellent resources listed below have enhanced their websites with RSS so you may want to consider this option instead of subscribing.

What is a Listserv?

A listserv is an e-mail server that will route a posted e-mail to a given list of subscribers.  It is simple to subscribe to mailing lists and listservs.

How do I subscribe?

Some websites have enrollment screens to fill out and some request you send a specifically formatted e-mail to a subscribe address.  Usually they will automatically send you an e-mail that you must confirm - this is to keep others from enrolling your e-mail address. Each mailing list has different instructions to subscribe and unsubscribe - the first few e-mails you receive will usually have these instructions and some post the instructions on the bottom of each e-mail.

What about spam and inappropriate content?

All the resources listed below are "clean" - that is, they do not share your e-mail address with others (as of August 2004) but you may want to check privacy policies.  Most of the listservs are moderated (that means that someone reviews posts and assures appropriateness).  Some of them offer posts in a "digest".  This means you can opt to receive a compilation of e-mails daily or review them on an archive webpage.

Have fun - try a few and see how you like them:
